Making a movie over the weekend may sound like a tall order, but one of the challenges some students will face starting Feb. 28.
The KIMEP Weekend Film Challenge is the second film challenge for the 2024-25 year. A similar competition was held in November. However, this challenge will offer more prizes and more money for potential winners including best male and female actors, production and stories.
Assistant professor Cole Russing from the Department of Media and Communication will lead the competition and be one of the judges for the competition.
“I’m very excited, one week before the kickoff event and already thirteen groups have signed up to compete,” Russing said. “This semester there are more categories, participation certificates, and a week a bit longer time frame to submit your film.”

Students will start at noon on Feb. 28 and have 72 hours to write, shoot, and edit their films before turning them in on March 3. At the kickoff event, there will be a drawing of the props, which are elements the creators must include in their film. The Feb. 28 event starts at noon in 208 Valikhanov Building.
All movies will be judged by an international jury of film scholars and producers. Winners will be announced in March during a pizza-fueled debut of the films.
