DESCRIPTION:Dear KIMEP Community members\, \n\nWe are pleased to invite you to CCASC’s upcoming guest lecture by distinguished scholar Professor Elizabeth Wishnick\, titled  “China’s Expanding Role in Central Asia: Russia’s Partner or Competitor?“\, organized in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education and the U.S.-Central Asia Research Network (U.S.-CARNet). \nThe event will take place at Hall No. 220\, Valikhanov Building\, on Monday\, October 28\, from 17:30 to 18:45. \n\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Wishnick will examine how China’s perspective on geopolitics\, domestic politics\, economic interests\, and cultural factors shape its role in Central Asia\, with special emphasis on Kazakhstan. Dr. Wishnick also will address the contention by some experts that\, since the full-scale war in Ukraine\, Russia’s role has been diminishing as China’s expands. Beijing’s effort to increase its influence is occurring at a time when Central Asian states are developing their own agenda for regional integration. In conclusion\, she will address how Central Asian states are responding to efforts by China to expand its role in the region. \nAll interested parties are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. DESCRIPTION:Presentation of the book “Post-Soviet Women: New Challenges and Ways to Empowerment” by Professor Ann-Mari Sätre organized by CSS.  Other contributors to the book will present too. \nThe lecture will take place at: \n12:00 on Friday\, September 27 \nHall No. 102\, Valikhanov Building\, and it will be followed by a Q&A session. \nAnn-Mari Sätre is Professor in Eurasian Studies at IRES Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies\, Uppsala University. She is specialized in the structure and performance of the Soviet/Russian economy. Her current research is focused on post-Soviet transformation\, women’s agency\, poverty and social policy in Russia. She is the author or co-author of several books (including Environmental Problems in the Shortage Economy: The Legacy of Soviet Environmental Policy\, Edward Elgar 1994\, and together with Leo Granberg The Other Russia: Local experience and societal change\, Routledge 2017)\, articles and book chapters on the Soviet/Russian political economy and women’s work. Among her publications is also a co-edited volume Attitudes\, Poverty and Agency in Russia and Ukraine (Routledge 2016\, with Ildiko Asztalos Morell). Her most recent book is The Politics of Poverty in Contemporary Russia (Routledge 2019). Her most recent publication is a co-edited book Post-Soviet Women: New Challenges and Ways to Empowerment (Palgrave 2023\, with Yulia Gradskova and Vladislava Vladimirova). \n\nAll members of the KIMEP community are welcome to join.
