SUMMARY:Guest Lecture by Dr. Zsoka Koczan\, Lead Economist at EBRD
DESCRIPTION:Dear KIMEP Community\, \n\nWe are pleased to invite you to a special guest lecture by Dr. Zsoka Koczan\, Associate Director and Lead Economist at the Office of the Chief Economist\, European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD)\, London. During this lecture\, Dr. Koczan will present key findings from two of EBRD’s latest reports\, the Transition Report 2024-25 and Life in Transition Survey IV. \nThe session will be chaired and moderated by Professor Nadeem Naqvi\, Department of Economics\, College of Social Sciences. \n Location: Hall No. 220\, Valikhanov Building\, KIMEP University \n\nPresentations: \n\nEBRD’s Transition Report 2024-25 explores industrial policies in the EBRD regions and beyond. These policies have seen a resurgence\, aiming to address market failures such as environmental degradation. However\, their track record is mixed. Their growing popularity is shaped primarily by domestic political economy considerations and rising geopolitical tensions. While industrial policies are typically employed by higher-income economies\, they are now increasingly used in economies with less administrative and fiscal capacity to implement them.\n\n  \n\nLife in Transition Survey IV\, conducted across 37 economies\, provides a comprehensive look at key socio-economic challenges\, including rising inequality of opportunity\, declining intergenerational mobility\, persistent informal employment\, digital divide concerns\, and climate attitudes.\n\nGuest Speaker: \nDr. Zsoka Koczan is an Associate Director and Lead Economist at the EBRD Office of the Chief Economist in London. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining the EBRD\, Dr. Koczan worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in the European Department and the Research Department\, contributing to the World Economic Outlook. She led the latest round of the Life in Transition Survey\, a household survey spanning over 40 economies. Her current research focuses on within-country income disparities\, migration\, and inequality. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to this session!

SUMMARY:China’s Expanding Role in Central Asia—Russia’s Partner or Competitor? (Lecture by Prof. Elizabeth Wishnick)
DESCRIPTION:Dear KIMEP Community members\, \n\nWe are pleased to invite you to CCASC’s upcoming guest lecture by distinguished scholar Professor Elizabeth Wishnick\, titled  “China’s Expanding Role in Central Asia: Russia’s Partner or Competitor?“\, organized in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education and the U.S.-Central Asia Research Network (U.S.-CARNet). \nThe event will take place at Hall No. 220\, Valikhanov Building\, on Monday\, October 28\, from 17:30 to 18:45. \n\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Wishnick will examine how China’s perspective on geopolitics\, domestic politics\, economic interests\, and cultural factors shape its role in Central Asia\, with special emphasis on Kazakhstan. Dr. Wishnick also will address the contention by some experts that\, since the full-scale war in Ukraine\, Russia’s role has been diminishing as China’s expands. Beijing’s effort to increase its influence is occurring at a time when Central Asian states are developing their own agenda for regional integration. In conclusion\, she will address how Central Asian states are responding to efforts by China to expand its role in the region. \nAll interested parties are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. For further details\, please visit CCASC’s website.
