The 5th Annual World Nomad Games will commence in Astana this September. The games, which feature traditional Central Asian games ranging from archery to wrestling.
“It is a great honor and responsibility for us to host unique international competitions in ethnic sports included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage,” said Deputy Chairman of the Association of National Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan Tastanbek Yessentayev in a June speech, according to a press release. “This event highlights the importance of preserving and promoting our cultural heritage at the global level.”
More than 100 countries will send a collective 3,000 athletes to participate in sports and games developed by nomadic cultures from around the world, according to organizers. The seven-day competition begins Sept. 8.
