Dear KIMEP Community,
We are pleased to invite you to a special guest lecture by Dr. Zsoka Koczan, Associate Director and Lead Economist at the Office of the Chief Economist, European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD), London. During this lecture, Dr. Koczan will present key findings from two of EBRD’s latest reports, the Transition Report 2024-25 and Life in Transition Survey IV.
The session will be chaired and moderated by Professor Nadeem Naqvi, Department of Economics, College of Social Sciences.
Location: Hall No. 220, Valikhanov Building, KIMEP University
Presentations:
- EBRD’s Transition Report 2024-25 explores industrial policies in the EBRD regions and beyond. These policies have seen a resurgence, aiming to address market failures such as environmental degradation. However, their track record is mixed. Their growing popularity is shaped primarily by domestic political economy considerations and rising geopolitical tensions. While industrial policies are typically employed by higher-income economies, they are now increasingly used in economies with less administrative and fiscal capacity to implement them.
- Life in Transition Survey IV, conducted across 37 economies, provides a comprehensive look at key socio-economic challenges, including rising inequality of opportunity, declining intergenerational mobility, persistent informal employment, digital divide concerns, and climate attitudes.
Guest Speaker:
Dr. Zsoka Koczan is an Associate Director and Lead Economist at the EBRD Office of the Chief Economist in London. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining the EBRD, Dr. Koczan worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in the European Department and the Research Department, contributing to the World Economic Outlook. She led the latest round of the Life in Transition Survey, a household survey spanning over 40 economies. Her current research focuses on within-country income disparities, migration, and inequality.
We look forward to welcoming you to this session!
