The new dean of student affairs has officially started at KIMEP University, bringing over two decades of experience in higher education and a commitment to fostering collaboration and growth across campus.
“Everyone from faculty, staff, and students has provided a warm welcome,” Dr. Christoper Bridges said. “I’ve found everybody to be friendly and excited about what they’re doing. It’s been a great welcome, and I’m really happy to be here.”
He said that KIMEP was a unique place, blending Kazakh, Russian, and Western cultures within an English-speaking environment.
“This is a unique campus in the world,” Bridges said. He said that he sees the university as a “third culture” space where students and staff learn from each other.
Bridges talked about KIMEP’s strong foundation while highlighting its potential for further development. “The institution has a pretty well-established and impressive history,” he said. “At the same time, it’s clearly moving into its next stage of growth.”
In his first weeks, Bridges has focused on connecting with various campus groups. He met with the student government to discuss their concerns and explore opportunities for collaboration. “We’ve already set up individual meetings with representatives to address particular issues,” he said. Also, he has started engaging with student club leaders and plans to host a meeting with all club representatives to strengthen ties.
Bridges participated in winter orientation, an international student welcoming party, and a volleyball tournament. “A lot of what I’m trying to do is just get out there and meet students so they know I’m here to be helpful,” he said.
One of his primary goals is to enhance support for student organizations by fostering transparency and creating shared expectations.
“Clear expectations, clear processes, clear policies – these are key,” he said. “When everyone understands how things work and where improvements can be made, it leads to much better relationships and outcomes.”
Bridges is committed to empowering student clubs and organizations while promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for all. His proactive approach and dedication to collaboration signal a new chapter for student affairs at KIMEP.
With a PhD in Higher Education Administration and Leadership from Ohio University, Bridges brings a global perspective to his new role, having held leadership positions in the United States, Singapore, and Qatar.
Reflecting on his own university experience, which included active participation in theater and creative clubs, Bridges emphasized the value of student life in personal and professional development.
“It’s a great opportunity to grow as a person and a professional,” he said.
He outlined three key priorities for his role: understanding KIMEP’s unique context, fostering an equitable environment with clear expectations, and maintaining transparency in decision-making. “Students are people. They want to understand how decisions are made and why,” he said.
As he settles into his role, Bridges said he is eager to support students in creating meaningful programs and opportunities.
“There’s so much potential here,” he said.
