Astana wasn’t always the capital. It was once a small town on the Kazakh steppe, known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, and later Akmola. After Kazakhstan gained independence, Almaty’s location in the far southeast made it less accessible to other regions, and there were concerns about separatist sentiments in some areas. In 1997, the government moved the capital from Almaty to strengthen national security.

Today, Astana is a fast-growing city, but it still carries the spirit of the steppe and the country’s nomadic history. If you’re planning to visit Kazakhstan’s capital this spring, there are plenty of spots to explore.

A quiet escape into nature

Just a 15-minute drive from the city center, a peaceful retreat offers visitors a break from urban life. The Forest Belt on the Korgalzhyn Highway, is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The man-made forest spans more than 100,000 acres and now has more than 11 million trees. The belt is a planned environment that Astana and Kazakhstan have continued to build for the past 27 years. Designers created it as a sort of eco-friendly buffer to Northern Kazakhstan’s notorious powerful winds, as well as to serve as a set of filters to help provide residents with cleaner air.

It has become a hub of relaxation and activity as ribbons of walking trails and bike paths cut through the manicured forest, offering a view of the steppe landscape not found in nature.

For those without a car, it’s easy to reach by taking buses 35, 45, or 66.

Breakfast with a view

High-rise buildings filled with restaurants and cafes give Astana a jagged skyline that cut into the crisp blue sky and fast moving clouds. One popular breakfast spot sits on the 22nd floor of a building near Botanical Park, offering guests a panoramic view of the city.

In the morning, guests can enjoy a peaceful breakfast while overlooking the city. In the evening, the view changes as the sun sets, casting shades of orange, pink, and purple in a waterfall of light.

As daylight fades, the city’s glass towers reflect the colors of the sky before the lights of Astana take over. From this height, visitors can see how the urban landscape transforms between day and night. The contrast between the fading natural light and the illuminated streets below offers a different perspective on the city’s architecture.

Panoramic view of Astana

The observation deck in President’s Park offers a 360-degree view of Astana, highlighting the city’s mix of modern skyscrapers, green spaces, and the Esil River.

From here, visitors can see how Asstana balances modern urban development with open spaces and greenery. It’s very Instagramable or simply taking in the beauty of the city from above. The Pyramid itself is an architectural marvel, making it a must-visit destination for both culture and city views.

A new tunnel in the Park of Peace and Reconciliation

A recently built tunnel in the Park of Peace and Reconciliation has quickly become one of Astana’s modern attractions. By day, it serves as a convenient pathway for walkers providing shade and a peaceful atmosphere. At night, it transforms into a glowing tunnel, illuminated by beautiful lights that make it look futuristic.

Whether you visit during the day or evening, it’s a unique addition to the city’s list of attractions. The entrance to the park is near the Barcelona residential complex bus stop. Walk straight for 200 meters to see the tunnel.

Step into the world of Game of Thrones

For fans of the globally popular HBO series Game of Thrones, Astana has a special treat. A themed area dedicated to the show features statues and decorations that transport visitors to the world of Westeros. Walking through this space feels like stepping into a scene from the series.

The area, in Astana Triathlon Park, is popular among fantasy lovers and those looking for a unique experience in Astana. Whether you want to take photos with the Iron Throne replica or admire the detailed craftsmanship of the displays, the setting offers an immersive atmosphere.

The Right Bank and Arbat: A lively cultural hub

Astana’s Right Bank has a distinct personality, offering a more traditional and lively atmosphere. Unlike the more structured Left Bank, which is home to government buildings and modern developments, The Right Bank feels more dynamic, with a wider variety of entertainment.

The famous Arbat is a pedestrian street filled with musicians, street performers, and local artists selling their work. Visitors can stroll through the area, listen to the music of local performers and savor street food like spiral potatoes and hot corn. People spend their free time here to observe a side of the city that feels full of life and culture.

One of the highlights of this part of the city is the bridge over the Esil River, which connects the Right Bank to the rest of Astana. The bridge offers stunning views of both the waterway and the skyline, making it a great place for an evening walk. Whether you’re looking to shop for local crafts, enjoy live music, or simply soak in the city’s energy, the Right Bank is the place to be.

Nurly Zhol Boulevard

At the center of Astana’s modern development is Nurly Zhol Boulevard, a grand avenue lined with architectural masterpieces and green spaces. The boulevard stretches through the heart of the city, offering visitors a place to walk, relax, and take in the surrounding sights.

In addition to its impressive buildings, Nurly Zhol features artistic installations and fountains, making it a visually appealing space. During the day, it’s a popular gathering place, while at night, the city lights create a stunning atmosphere. It’s a must-visit location for anyone wanting to experience the essence of Astana.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, a lively cultural scene, or stunning cityscapes, Astana has something for everyone. This spring, take the opportunity to discover the city’s lesser-known treasures and experience its unique charm for yourself.
