Finals are coming up, and everyone is preparing in their own way. Here’s a compilation written by a 4.01 GPA student on how KIMEP students with high GPAs prepare for finals:
One of the KIMEPians, Islam Suleimanov (GPA 3.90), believes that preparation should start in advance, specifically at the start of the semester.
In his four years of studying in university, Suleimanov said he developed a habit of taking notes during lectures by concentrating on key concepts, details, and examples, which is beneficial for future preparation for exams. When reviewing time comes, these notes make it easy to recall the essential points of the course.
However, reviewing doesn’t consist only of notes, textbooks, and slides given by the professor. A good way to deepen your understanding and solidify your knowledge is to look for additional information online on the subject, Suilemanov advises.
The routine Suleimanov finds the most helpful in learning includes active recall and speed repetition techniques. Additionally, he regularly tests himself after studying a new topic to ensure that acquired knowledge stays with him for a long time. He also adds that this method helps him find the areas he should work through.
Two weeks before the exams is when his real preparation begins. By revising his notes for 30 minutes each day, studying in small chunks, and taking breaks he avoids burnout and keeps concentration through studying.
Suleimanov also highlights the importance of trusting oneself, how well one is prepared, and approaching the exam with a positive attitude.
“By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.” — Benjamin Franklin.
While some start preparing weeks before, others prefer to do it a few days before the exam.
Alima Zholdasbayeva (GPA 4.30) prepares three to five days ahead depending on subject difficulty.
As Suleimanov, she goes through all the materials covered in the course, paying attention to names, dates, and facts. However, her approach is focused on learning by heart. To do that she repeats everything she studied out loud or writes it down in her notes or laptop, Zholdasbayeva said.

To keep herself focused, Zholdasbayeva prefers to study alone with a laptop, snacks, and beverages by her side. She also adds that the best times to review are morning and daytime because that’s when she is most energized and things are easy to learn.
One of the specific things she does in her routine is taking a bath or shower before doing anything else. Zholdasbaeyva said that it helps her to relax for upcoming preparation sessions.
Next students can be relatable to the majority of students.

Zhanbota Turganbaikyzy (GPA 3.95) said four hours of preparation before the exam date is enough.
Her method of studying consists of sometimes cramming, and sometimes just reviewing, it all depends on how good she is at a subject.
But, in contrast with Zholdasbayeva, Turganbaikyzy prefers to study in public places like cafes. The presence of other people keeps her concentrated on her tasks while being alone makes her linger on her phone.
“It’s like telling everyone you are going to the gym and now [everyone knowing] it motivates you to go,” she said.
Her essentials in studying are notes, coffee, headphones, and sometimes a laptop if her phone is not enough.
The music Turganbaikyzy listens to while preparing is songs she over-listened, she said. According to her, listening to that kind of music feels like white noise which helps her be focused on studying for finals.

Similar to Suleimanov, Turganbaikyzy said that having a negative mindset worsens the preparation. Instead of focusing on the bad sides and hating the subject, she suggests looking at it from another perspective. Thinking of the knowledge she can acquire, the friends she can find, and the good memories she can create helps her see the course in a positive light.
Every student has their individual routine of preparing for final exams that personally works for them.
However, the key idea that unites all the students with high GPAs is being present during classes. Actively participating, taking notes, or at least paying attention throughout the semester are great techniques to excel in your finals without putting too much effort into the preparation.
Good luck with your exams! Don’t give up!
